Despite what City Council candidates on the campaign trail claim, the City of Greensboro has no control over Guilford County Schools.

However, that doesn’t mean the city can’t offer some assistance to the schools or, to be more precise, to the teachers.  And from now through Sept. 30, parking violators can choose to pay their fines in school supplies.

The City of Greensboro, through the end of next month, will be accepting new and unwrapped school supplies or cash donations to the Guilford Education Alliance Teacher Supply Warehouse as payment for parking ticket fines.

Cash donations may be made directly to the Teacher Supply Warehouse online at tinyurl.com/GSOparkingtix.  Those who choose to pay their parking citations with a cash donation or by donating school supplies must show a receipt to verify that the donation or the value of the school supplies is equal to or greater than the parking fine.  So, by choosing this method, people don’t get a break on their parking fines.

Donations must be made within 30 days of the infraction and handicapped parking violations are not included in the program.

School supply donations should be brought to the Greensboro Parking Office on the UG level of City Hall at 300 W. Washington St.

This is the third year that the City of Greensboro has worked with the Guilford Education Alliance to help provide teachers with needed supplies. The past two campaigns have raised $3,100 in donations.  The Teacher Supply Warehouse allows Guilford County School teachers to shop for items at no cost up to four times a year.

Suggested school supply donations include:

Scissors for both children and adults

This is one of the rare times I find myself in agreement with Chris. This is an excellent idea that will greatly benefit the schools without milking the taxpayers.

Personally I think it should be extended through October.

On November 15, 2018, the last printed edition of the Rhino Times came off the presses leaving the world of print journalism behind and moving into the future with an e-paper. Readers of The Rhino Times will be able to rely on rhinotimes.com for daily coverage and opinions of Greensboro while gaining insider access to important Guilford County work sessions and events. The new online platform allows readers to connect and interact with each other as well as the journalists.
