Aug. 2—Students will soon be returning to school and the governor and an area credit union are making sure they are prepared.

On Monday, Gov. Roy Cooper announced the beginning of the Governor's School Supply Drive." The drive is being done in conjunction with State Employees' Credit Union (SECU).

Cooper encourages people to take time out to purchase school related items and drop them off at any SECU location in the state. Some of the requested items they are asking the public to purchase and donate: pencils and pens, paper (all types), crayons, markers, USB flash drives, spiral notebooks, sanitizing wipes and tissues.

Prior to donating the items the governor encourages people to come together at work, church or any organization to have their own drive.

Jennifer Butler, branch manager at SECU's Sanford location, 1002 Spring Lane, said they have a container in their lobby ready to be filled with school supplies. She said some the people she works with at the location have already given the donation process a good start.

"We have a table set up," she said. "We're just taking your standard school supplies. Bookbags are the most popular item."

Their location is open Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

She said the SECU has participated in the program in the past.

"I think it's a wonderful program and we (SECU) are proud to support our community."

The donations not only help the students but the teachers as well.

"We have good participation, but we would love more people to drop off their school supplies," she said. "It really helps out that teacher who may be paying for supplies out of their own pocket."

The collection drive ends Aug. 31 and once all the supplies are collected volunteers throughout the state will distribute the supplies to schools throughout the state.
