Gigabyte A7 X1 gaming notebook review

I have reviewed many Gigabyte laptops this year, and when the brand contacted me to solve this A7 X1, I was very worried. Mainly because I really don't want to test another Aero clone after reviewing three identical laptops this year alone. Fortunately, the Gigabyte A7 X1 is completely different. If anything, this notebook is one of my favorites from the company this year. It may be slightly larger than other devices, but this device has incredibly powerful features and some of the best heat dissipation capabilities I have seen in a Windows laptop.

First of all, Gigabyte A7 X1 is equipped with NVIDIA RTX 3070 GPU and AMD Ryzen 9 5900HX CPU. This alone makes it one of the best gaming laptops on the market. The display is a 17.3-inch HD 144Hz panel, which is very suitable for gaming. It also contains a large selection of ports. Again, this is not a slim and compact laptop, but the advantages you get from the larger size and cooling system make it very worthwhile.

In most cases, Gigabyte A7 X1 is very basic in terms of design. However, I do think that this overall visual beauty applies to laptops. The housing is completely black and made of plastic. This helps keep it under 2.6 kg. On the top, there is a Gigabyte logo that is not bright, but printed on the shell.

At the bottom of the Gigabyte A7 X1, I was very surprised to see that the notebook has a removable battery. I don't think I have reviewed a laptop battery that can be unlocked for years. If anything, I think this is a thing of the past. Just loosen the clamp, you can easily take out this 48.96W/h battery. The battery is also small and compact and can be easily replaced without any tools.

A large number of fans inside the Gigabyte A7 X1 are also displayed at the bottom of the device. The company calls this cooling system "Windforce". They are much larger than most of the fans I have seen this year, and they help to stay calm, especially in intense games. The ventilation holes under the equipment are very spacious, which also helps to make all the hot air flow through the equipment better than ever.

Inside the Gigabyte A7 X1, you will find an empty slot for 2.5-inch storage devices and an additional M.2 SSD slot. If you want to upgrade, you can also remove the factory-installed SSD. If you want to upgrade, you also need to replace the installed RAM.

As for the ports, you will be happy to know that Gigabyte has been perfectly placed around the device. This is especially true if you are right-handed. This is due to the HDMI, LAN, USB X and Mini DisplayPort on the back of the notebook. There are two USB 3.2 Gen2 ports and a DC port on the left.

On the right is the audio port and USB 2.0. In short, the right side contains ports that you may never use. Slower USB port and audio jack. This means that for gamers, there will be no debris such as charging cables and mouse cables in the right hand area of your mouse.

The keyboard on the Gigabyte A7 X1 is a basic Chiclet keyboard. The white decoration and black buttons look great on the device. There is no RGB for each key. Instead, the entire keyboard uses a color determined by the built-in application. The touchpad is also great, and the extra left and right click buttons make it easier to move around when using it.

Finally, the display is very suitable for what you pay here. The Full HD panel has a high refresh rate of 144Hz, but it is an IPS panel, so some poor viewing angles and low brightness are expected. The maximum brightness I measured was 320 nits. So you won't get HDR at all here. In fact, the panel has not passed HDR certification. Gigabyte also has great panels on some creator notebooks, which are not the best. This is a panel designed for games, not so much photo editing and video content. It has only 90% sRGB coverage and 64% Adobe eRGB.

I did some tests on the Gigabyte A7 X1 to test its cooling, gaming and productivity. The game especially performed very well. If anything, the result is the best I have seen this year. I played some games on my 4K TV and most of them reached 50FPS at 4K. Of course, if you play a game on a 144Hz monitor, you can escape at over 100FPS in some games. Competitive games will also maximize this display effect. Here are some test results:

The sound of the Gigabyte A7 X1 will be loud, but not bad. When reloaded, it has a maximum of 62DB, and during normal use without games, it reaches 35DB. During the game, the device can reach up to 50 degrees Celsius around the keyboard. Internally, the highest temperature I read during the one-hour full game of Far Cry 6 was 99 degrees Celsius. Even in such a hot situation, the system does not throttle the CPU at all. The base clock remains at 3.5GHz when maximized. It just shows how this Windforce cooling system works here.

The speakers on the Gigabyte A7 X1 are also good. They can reach a maximum of 85DB and manage to make good sounds at the same time. Of course, when playing games, you have to fight with fans, so you might want to use headphones here.

Last but not least, we have batteries. Although I like its detachable idea, it also has some disadvantages. First of all, compared with the built-in battery, its charging time is longer, and the duration is not long. When the brightness is 40%, you can use it here for up to 4 hours. At maximum brightness and average non-gaming usage, it will last less than an hour and a half. Definitely not suitable for the "on the go" type. It also uses a DC power adapter to charge, so you must take it with you wherever you go.

Gigabyte A7 X1 is an excellent gaming laptop. Although the battery is not the best, the performance you get from this device is top-notch. The cooling system is one of the best systems I have seen this year, and the upgradeable slots make it a long-term investment. It is fast, lively, and very suitable for games.

This Gigabyte A7 X1 review is based on the lending unit that Gigabyte sent us. It is now available in SA, starting at R41,999.
