This 13-inch notebook packs a fast Core i5 processor, a fairly capacious 256GB SSD, and a colorful Full HD display into a handsome body that’s only 0.57 inches thick. The S 13 also provides robust Dolby sound and a comfortable keyboard, although the touchpad can be quite finicky at the times.

Overall, this Acer is one of the best in its weight class. Acer deserves credit for not going down the MacBook clone route like so many others have. Rather than being just another silver slab, the Aspire S 13 stands out with its obsidian black color and textured Nano-embossed cover that gives the notebook a sleek pinstripe aesthetic.

The Asus ZenBook 13 is a head turner, just like most ZenBooks. The entire chassis of the ZenBook 13 is made of pine gray aluminum alloy. There is not much bling other than the glossy chrome Asus logo embedded in the center left. And once your eye is there, be sure to bring your attention to the concentric circles cascading down the lid. While it doesn’t collect as many fingerprints as its convertible sister, the Asus ZenBook Flip S, it still picks up its fair share.

The inside of the laptop has more of that pretty pine gray than Asus’ concentric circles. Instead, you get a matte finish that’s cool to the touch. On the lower part of the deck is a slightly raised palm rest, where you’ll find an absolutely huge touchpad. That palm rest gives way to a recess that houses the full-size keyboard. Opening the laptop reveals Asus’ ErgoLift hinge, which raises the keyboard 3 degrees to make typing that much more comfortable.

The Acer Swift 7 is thinnest and lightest notebook I’ve ever tested. At 1.96 pounds (890 grams) and 0.39 inches (9.95 mm), it surpasses Apple’s recently released 12-inch MacBook in portability. It is even a full third of a pound lighter than an iPad Pro with Apple Smart Keyboard attached. The Swift 7 also outperforms the MacBook with a 14-inch touchscreen display.

It’s not a tiny notebook for casual use, but the primary computer for someone looking for the ultimate thin and light notebook. On paper, the Swift 7 has everything that makes it the ultimate thin and light notebook: a dual-core Core i7 processor, 16GB of RAM, 512GB of NVMe storage, and two USB Type-C Thunderbolt 3 ports. In the box, Acer includes a thin case and a dongle that adds a USB-A port and HDMI.

The all-metal Yoga 910 is a perfect example of how good a hybrid can be too. It’s compact size and relatively light weight are combined with an excellent 13.9-inch touchscreen that’s almost borderless, making it look and feel closer to a regular tablet when folded back on itself. Rotate the display on its bracelet-like 360-degree hinge and you have gone from a big-screen tablet to a great ultraportable laptop. The hinge is stiff enough to hold the screen in any position, but moves so freely that you can adjust the angle with a single finger.

It might seem silly to be impressed with a hinge, but it works well, keeping the design as thin as possible and looking cool. We’ve seen the hinge on the 900 and Yoga 3 Pro before, but the display is a first for the line. The multi-touch display is available in Full HD and 4K UHD resolutions and doesn’t have the typical wide bezels or borders on the top and sides found on other laptops. This allowed Lenovo to fit a 13.9-inch screen in roughly the same space as a 13.3-inch display. Not only does it give you more space to work, but it also looks great with excellent brightness and color.
