It’s not 4K or OLED, and it doesn’t have a fancy aspect ratio, but the screen meets the basic requirements: It’s sharp, bright, and vibrant. The panel showed off the beautiful costumes used in the film; we could see every single seam woven into a garment worn by a menacing hooded figure. And the red paint on the antagonists’ masks made them even more sinister. Be warned, though: this panel is very shiny and reflects objects in bright environments.

It’s a welcome change that makes the 314 look better than some of its competitors. Weighing in at 1.7 kg, it feels quite heavy when we pick it up, but given its slim size and small stature, it remains quite manageable.

The model we received for review is the 13.5-inch Surface Laptop 4, and it’s one of the lightest and thinnest laptops we’ve ever used without being hard to type on. The lid of the Platinum Surface Laptop 4 is, well, platinum, and the only mark is a chrome Microsoft logo in the center of the laptop. The bottom of the laptop looks similar, but the keyboard tray is a slightly darker color.

The Acer Aspire 5 2022 saw only a few design changes from the previous version, including a slimmer keyboard deck and a switch to a magnesium-aluminum alloy in the lid. Otherwise, it is the same dark gray case with simple lines and angles and no frills aside from a few Acer logos. The display’s plastic bezels are relatively large and the screen-to-case ratio is a bit old-fashioned at 81%. Budget notebooks tend to have a plain design, and the Aspire 5 is no different.

However, Acer will also offer models with blue and gold lids that offer a bit more pizzazz. The notebook is made of plastic outside the lid and the build quality is acceptable for a budget notebook. The lid can be bent a bit and the keyboard can also be bent a bit, but that is not a big deal. The main reason for the Aspire 5’s poor rating last year was the display, which was the worst we’ve seen on a notebook in years. It was atrocious, with narrow and inaccurate colors, low brightness, and a shockingly low contrast ratio.

The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 9 ($1,229) is a solid mid-range business notebook that is a bit too expensive for what you get. It also has good speakers for a business notebook, a minimal amount of bloatware, a responsive keyboard, and incredible battery life.

The X1 Carbon features a 14-inch HD display (1,920×1,200 pixels) with anti-glare. It is an impressive display that nevertheless lags behind the competition, which is certainly a problem considering the price.

The Asus ROG Zephyrus G15 is available in two color variants: Eclipse Grey or Moonlight White – and we received the latter for testing. The Moonlight White will be an instant hit with consumers. It has a striking look that isn’t too flashy. It’s bold, but understated. It’s all-white and is spiced up with an illuminated keyboard. While the keys are all white, they have RGB lighting that adds some sparkle. The keyboard has a travel of 1.7 mm and offers a “silent typing” experience.

The only downside is that the four hotkeys at the top aren’t particularly useful. Instead, they take up a lot of space. There is an HD camera on the top (with some useful features like noise reduction). The touchpad surface is a touch larger than most competitors and it is very accurate and fast. The Asus ROG Zephyrus G15 is absolutely one of the best gaming notebooks you can find right now thanks to its near-perfect combination of gaming performance, battery life, and design.

The biggest shortcoming of the Lenovo IdeaPad Duet Chromebook is its design. The magnetic kickstand cover and keyboard felt firmly attached to the tablet during our testing, but we found ourselves repeatedly pulling the keyboard out unintentionally or pushing the entire back cover off when we tried to extend the kickstand. These aren’t earth-shattering bugs, and fixing them is as simple as putting the cover or keyboard back on, but it happened often enough that we can imagine some people getting frustrated by it.

Unfortunately, the biggest problem with the Lenovo IdeaPad Duet Chromebook is a reason for some people to give up: the limited size of the keyboard and, to a lesser extent, the responsiveness of the trackpad. Judging by the already low standards of laptop trackpads, the Lenovo IdeaPad Duet Chromebook can be sluggish and even lifeless at times. As for the keyboard, the keys are packed very tightly given the limited space it offers.

The design of the Razer Book 13 is very familiar, as it is very similar to the Razer Blade Stealth. It is slightly smaller in width and depth, but unless you put the two models side by side, it would be pretty easy to confuse this model with the other. Since this is Razer’s first official productivity notebook, some of us were expecting something more, like a 360-degree hinge or maybe even pen input. But considering how well received the Stealth model is, it makes sense to repeat what has worked in the past.

The build quality of the notebook is exactly what we expected: excellent. The unibody design is very sturdy, being made from a single piece of aluminum. The design is very rectangular, but the balance and symmetry are ideal for transport and handling. The lid is pretty plain, with the exception of a lightly embossed Razer logo. We praised this design on the Stealth model, as we really like it better than the bright green logo found on the Blade 15 and 17.
