Nevin Wehner, a fifth grader at Pukalani Elementary School, took home top honors at the 2021 Hawaii State Elementary School VEX IQ Robotics Championship on March 20.

Wehner competed as a one-man team at the championship; he took on the roles of driver, builder, designer and programmer.

He received the Robot Skills Champion award, along with the Design Award for his engineering design notebook, video entry and interview.

Last year, Wehner’s Pukalani Elementary School robotics team, 10704B, captured the state championship title. The team was slated to compete at the VEX Robotics World Championship in Louisville, Ky., which was ultimately canceled due to COVID-19.
